News to me - thought there were 1071, 385 for UK, rest to Japan, some Europe & Middle East

Never heard of a Defender 50th 110

Land Rover South Africa also built 26 50th Anniversary edition 90s featuring the BMW M52 engine. The vehicles were painted Santorini Blue with special decal graphics on the sides. They also featured "colour-coded wheel arch mouldings, spot lamps, spare wheel carrier, free style alloy wheels, stainless steel A-frame Bullbar, two-tone solid paint, Willards welding and side runners" as well as "leather seats, radio and CD player, leather steering wheel and gear lever as well as a cooler box." Each was randomly numbered between 1 and 50, as 24 50th Anniversary edition 110s were also built, but with a diesel engine. The special 110 was called "Safari" and was painted in a limestone green colour. It featured everything included on the 50th Anniversary 90 with the addition of "a roof rack and step ladder, as well as a wrap-around Bullbar in place of the A-frame" and "special cloth seats are used in favour of the leather ones. It is also fitted with a Pathfinder GPS system

Td5 engine

Hi Guys,
I now own a South African Defender 110 50th anniversary and have it here in British Columbia.
It’s badged NO. 47 and is one of 24 Defender 110 50th built.
It’s factory fitted with a 300Tdi ,R380 Gear box and factory air con.
If I can figure how to post some pics, I’ll be doing so.
Some of you may find this informative and interesting.
Cheers.

Great.

I've often thought of stripping mine and building a 110 out of it, maybe when retirement looms, and my chassis gives up the ghost

the bmw powered defender has/had a cult following in SA I am told - a friend had one down there - but rolled it Sad

Not sure it was a 50th though - or at least not as we know it.

If you want to see them there are sometimes some on gumtree.co.za

There are some that have been imported to the Uk.

Wow that is a rare truck! Never actually seen a 110 50th before.

I'm the proud owner of a 90 50th with the 2.8i engine, my family have owned it since it was imported new from SA. For a long time it was the only SA 50th in the country but since then two more have been imported, one of which has recently been returned to the original factory Santorini Blue paint job.

Although they were CKD kits built by LRSA the M52 Defenders were properly developed with LRUK backing and BMW at the time. They even feature in the Microcat, albeit with a lot of BMW part numbers.

As has been said, there were a little over 1000 M52 Defenders made and they have a cult following in SA. Increasingly so here too, there are probably a dozen or so in the UK and in fact I imported a non-50th 2.8i 110 a couple of years ago too.

Although the M52's are more or less as rare as the 50th V8's, unlike the V8 50th it didn't have anything different in terms of powertrain and the spec consisted of the lairy paintjob, polished front bumper, A-bar, leather interior, and of course the numbered plaques.

Here's my 90, it was featured in LRM a couple of years ago (as well as back in 2001!)
