Hi Nick,
I havn't - but am interested to know how it goes...
I have a few bits which need attention, but am wondering if it's best just to leave it for a while longer, and then have it all done at once...

How much of the car are they painting for the £2500?
And are they fitting the later style rear door (the one with the rounded window)? Was wondering if it is a stronger, one-piece construction?

Hi Nick

I had a load of paintwork done under warranty by a main dealer - I had the usually Land Rover bubbling problem - electrolytic corrision (if you don't know basically a reaction between the ali and steel). Mine was around the rivets on the rear tub, rear door and on the the rear cappings.
Dealer sorted it all out and repaired a couple of scratches - most of it reappeared in six months ! Did it all again and replaced the rear door (I have a Mantec wheel carrier fitted) six months later it was back again ! I'm leaving mine for a while and am then going to book into Simmonites - Dave Simmonite - founder started life as a panel repairer / sprayer so they know their stuff - and claim to be able to bottom it out - may be worth getting a quote from them. As for back door go for latest door - if you can afford it Exclamation - much stronger and you can fit central locking to it - only prob is you will have a different key for the lock unless you change the barrels on the front door at same time - oh and it will be more expensive. Good luck - like to hear how you get on.
Regards
Simon

Hi Nick

Bradford West Yorkshire - 01274 833351 www.simmonites.co.uk

I've used them for years - however had a gap of ten years while I had a company car. Just used them again for the MOT and service on 149 - Alan Green has used them on both his 50th's. If you call the best guy to speak to is Anthony - wealth of knowledge. They usually exhibit at most big shows - you can then see the quality of the paintwork - do a lot of mail order also. Also in their yard is a specialist 4 x 4 breaker.

Hope this helps good luck

Simon

Hi Chris

When I bought mine the LH door had a dent/scratch on it which the dealer blew in. When I had the rear tub sorted the first time I asked the paint shop to deal with some scratches on the roof above the rear door again they just blew them in & compounded to blend in - the paint is no different to any modern day paint finish using clear over base. Small area should be able to dealt with by 'Chips Away' or 'Sprint Finish' or in fact any other mobile paint repair service - the only thing they will need to have is the self prime acid etch for the ali.
These guys are great for paint - http://www.auto-paint.co.uk/ will do it in a tin, aerosol and touch up pot.
This is the the best compounding and finishing I know off http://www.farecla.com/ - there products can be found on ebay. Hope this helps.

Cheers

Simon

Hi Simon

Are you saying it is possible to repaint a small part of a panel painted in 'Atlantis Blue', for example where there has been some corrosion or a scratch, and get the new paint to change blue/green the same as the existing panel? I was always under the impression you had to get at least the whole panel resprayed if not a complete side.

Cheers

Neil

I was under the same impesion as Neil.

I didnt think it can be blown in as it will look different. I thought the only way is to do whole panels at a time to get a match, making sure you think like when it was origonally done to spray from the same way.
I have seen some 50th with small touch ups and it looked compleatly different to the origonal.
I friend of mine had chip away out to look at his and they wouldnt do it as it was flip paint.

I remember the workshop manager at James French telling me how they sprayed a 50th rear door 3 times to get it right, they sprayed it off the car before fittting, fitted it and it did not match, then sprayed it on the car, didnt match so they sprayed the whole of the back.

Best regards

James

I had some paintwork done on the front of my 50th a while back. I had damaged the passenger side wing and put in a few deep scratches. Like you the quotes I had where ridiculously high and even then they could never guarantee a complete match. However I found a local independent body panellist in Basingstoke working from some rather out dated building behind a pub, going against everything I believed in I went in for a quote. The quote was fantastic £250 for panel beating, spraying in the wing and to top it all he guaranteed a paint match or he would respray the entire side. I saw an example of his work on a Bentley which he had in for a respray and was impressed. Needless to say he did an awesome job, matched the paint perfectly and was extremely reliable. When I did come to sell my 50th I looked into have a couple of scratches in the tub touched up by chips away and they also refused to do the work as they could not guarantee a match - so be wary of any companies who say they can touch in minor scratches. The previous owner of mine had touched in a scratch and it looked bloody awful. I hope your paint job goes well.
