apparently you can change the transfer box to obtain a lower ratio final drive, reduced revs when cruising.

How, where, how much, part numbers, can I do it myself, and if anyone has done it is it worth the effort?

Hello,

Welcome to the site.

The final drive ratio can be change from 1:22 to 1:410. This give it a better drive, more power but increses the revs when driving moterway speeds i think.

Have a look at the 'performance increase' thread from febuary:

What number is your 50th?Do i have your details on the register?

Best regards

thanks for the reply, I am looking to reduce the revs on the motorway, I dont really need the extra acceleration as the engine has been worked on anyway. I am on the register number 95 Steve Brookes, you even have a picture of the car! I dont know where that came from but it looks good!

Hi,

Sorry Steve, i couldnt remember where i knew the name Brooks from.
I took that picture at the LRO show in 2003 i think.

I think you should talk to Ashcroft transmitions and see if they can recomend anything as they are the transmition experts.

Best regards

thanks,

I have visited the web site for ashcroft transmissions and they will have what I want, I need to reduce the revs whilst on the motoerway.

I want to keep the landrover but my main gripes are the fuel consumption and noise. The mpg is unresolvable but I could always convert to a diesel engine! but I have managed to reduce the noise considerably with extensive sound proofing throughout. The main improvements came from an engine blanket, re-routing the air intake to reduce induction roar, and lead lined insulation material over the transmission tunnel. I thought that reducing revs throughout the range would also keep it quieter.
