I am new to the forum and own 50th number 127.

I am currently considering replacing the tyres and buying a stainless steel exhaust.

The tyres should be road biased, preferably Michelin or Goodyear. Could anyone provide me with their suggestions and approximate prices?

I have noticed that various companies are now producing S/S exhausts; Scorpion racing, Rimmer brothers, double S and JE Engineering. Could anyone provide me with further details and which would be the best option? i.e: the one that releases more HP, quality, durability, cost etc.

I will be taking the vehicle to JE Engineering on Thursday for a 12,000 mile service. Would it make sense to have their exhaust fitted? What other upgrades would be worth considering whilst at JE?

I was reading one of the past issues of LRO and have noticed that Frogs Island were producing NAS spec vehicles. It also stated that they were remanufacturing the automatic gear lever plastic console (the one that resides under the cubby box). Has anyone looked into this and are they identical to those currently in the 50th Anniversary?

Thanks

Konrad

Hi Konrad

Welcome - upgrading and tyres are often talked about: if you haven't already look at this post re upgrades .......

http://www.defender50th.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=100&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

and this ......
http://www.defender50th.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=65

plus many more - the key thing with upgrades is that current OEM tyres are only rated at 90mph I think - so any tweaks to the power unit may mean new tyres anyway ! JE are very helpful - I spoke to them when I got mine - but as live in Yorkshire they are a bit far away. Brakes - Green Stuff pads do make a difference - most Landy specialist can fit these along with the vented drilled discs. SS exhaust - interested to hear more on this - I will upgrade mine when it falls off ! Just watch that they also fit SS brackets amd fixings - a friend of mine had one fitted to a SIIA and it fell off - not fitted with SS fittings ! James our moderator, Mr 50th and worldwide 50th guru has Michelins fitted to his - hopefully he will post the details. A simple upgrade is to have it chipped - Mark Adams is the man. Remember though that uprades affect your insurance - don't get caught out best to let them know what you do rather than have null and void insurance ! Good luck - happy spending - hope you've got lots of cash !!

Cheers

Simon

Simon

Thanks for the info. Which tyres (including sizes) are you running?

In your opinion, what is the best performancing enhancing modification to make? Without spending bucket loads of cash....

Hi Konrad

I'm still on the original factory fitted ones (what ever they are !) - only done 29K ! To me the most important thing was LPG (again plenty of posts on this one) - £5++ K on fuel pa no thanks - cut say £7k in half = £3k to spend on the 50th Very Happy , and £500 to spend on the missus !! Crying or Very sad.

I would say the gearing followed by a rechip. Hope it helps.

Hi Konrad,

Both Michelin and Goodyear are good tyres. I have Michelin 4x4 M+S tyres and they perform well as they are more road tyres.

Unless you do the whole exhaust then your not going to get many more HP. To get the power you need tubual manifolds (about £500) and some perfomance cats (about £800 for a made pipe or cheaper if you custom do it). If you have LPG i think you can remove the cats. Then you got the rest of the system from the cat back which is what everyone sells.
The JE one is nice with the twin pipes but expensice at £600.
Never seen a rimmer bros one but its only £289, i think the member "Carter"on here has one if you want to email and ask him about it.
Custom is always a good way to go as you get what you want, as Chris says, PD Gough are good.

If your looking for it to go faster and a better drive then forget the exhaust, that just makes it sound nice.
Have it re-geared at ashcroft trasmitions or overfinch. Makes a much better drive. Is about £500.
Then have it chipped by Mark Adams, about £800.

Then play with the exhaust and bits.

Best regards

James

James I understand that you have fitted slightly smaller diameter tyres than those fitted at the factory. Do they fit the original rims without any problem?

Could you please send me the exact tyre size?

Excuse my ignorance but can you provide more information regarding the Bourg Warner chain drive that you have been talking about?

I live near Luton and could quite easily visit Ashcroft Transmissions. What is the main benefit of changing the gearing and does the cost include fitment? What kind of ratios do they fit in comparisson to those that I have at present? I live very near Luton so paying them a visit is not a problem.

Sorry about all of the questions but I am relatively new to the scene.

Does anyone have a copy of the CD regarding maintenance that they could possibly burn and send me? I can arrange a cheque. I have a Haynes manual for the diesel as I used to have a 300 TDI Defender but this does not obviously cover the engine.

Cheers

Konrad

Hi,

They fit fine, they are smaller on the side wall hight but the same width. They are 255/65's. I have there to go with the borge warner box for the right gearing. The standard tyre size does look better so stick with it if you can.

Using the borge warner box is just a different way of doing it. It runs slightly quieter. BUT costs alot more to do it, i wouldnt recoment it. you need the box, a gear kit, brakets and a different rear prop shaft to fit it (about £1000 parts +fitting).

The benifit of changing the gearing is that it holds the gears better, changes better and makes it quicker. Its much better to drive. Give ashcroft a phone and ask them, they are the experts, they can recomend a tyre size too to go with the gearing.

If you email (defender50th@hotmail.com) me your address i will send you a CD.

Best regards

James
