Has anyone had any experience in changing the bulbs which illuminate the gear selector position?
Mine was recently serviced by a Land Rover dealer who nothiced one of the bulbs had blown. They wanted £49 to change it, so obvioulsy I declined . Now the other one has gone too!
Good job I saved my fifty quid. However, it looks as though the entire transmission tunnel cover will have to be removed to replace the bulbs.
Cheers,
Rich. |

Hi Rich,
Yes - I had to replace one of the bulbs a while ago (after one blew, followed by the other a couple of days later!) - it was a bit tricky, but managed to do it without removing the console...
No need to pay for this one!
1. Remove the gear selector surround trim (lever it up & hope it doesn't break - I lost a lug, but it still went back on ok). You will then see the bulb holders through the gap, (1 each side) which will be usefull.
2. Unscrew & remove the cubby box liner (base).
3. Get in the back!
4. Put your arm down through the cubby box apature, and feel your way forward under the console to the bulb holders - get your fingers on them and pull out.
5. I seem to remember the wires to the holders are quite long, so you can pull the holder back to where you can see it, to replace the bulb.
When wiggling the bulb holder out of the gear selector unit, I think you have to push the console up & clear slightly to give you room - you may be able to gently lever it up with a wide blade screwdriver rested on the selector above with you other hand, or push from underneath...
Hope this helps.

Hi Rich
As Ads says, just remove the cubby box tray and you can acsess the bulbs.
Maybe worth buying LED bulbs like i did as they should last longer www.ultraleds.co.uk
Hope GB 001 is doing well.
Best regards
James

Cheers guys, that'll be a big help.
I'll also see about getting LEDs as I was thinking of changing the dash lights for blue LEDs anyway. |

OK,
I have now replaced the selector lights, (cheers for the tips) and I bought a Defender LED kit for the instrument lights. However, the LED bulbs only fit two of the instruments, the Temp gauge and the Fuel gauge. The speedo and rev counter require smaller LEDs. Also while I'm at it, I would like to replace the Fan and heater control panel lights.
For those of you who have these replaced, could you tell me the specifications required, so I can order some from Ultra LEDs.
Cheers,
Rich. |

crist everyones going blue.
i think i've strarted a craze again.
you lot all now buy leds for the job!
i had to manufacture everything including the mounts for the bulbs!!!
as to the panel light on the heater controls u need 4 about 1 inch apart to make the effect realy work.
this mean drilling the backs out and fitting the leds in place then extending the legs to couple them up.
work a treat just dont put the last blub to low other wise the hot red bit on the display looks crap!
see you a bling.
for interest the air ssytems in just got to put in the four airbags and two front pipe!
computer and remote controll also in and wired for sound.
ttfn

Thanks again,
just the response I needed.
As an idea, it might be good to group these kinds of things together as articles in a tips or how to do it section? |

Unfortunately I won't be able to make Billing this year, but certainly hope to attend next year. I also hope to be able to do the Land Rover Gaydon Heritage Run next year. |
