Hi all,

I’ve just purchased a defender 90 landrover test mule on a Q plate.
It was originally built by landrover in 1995 as a NAS spec development car.
It was used to prototype the NAS car before it was put into production and sent to the USA.

Following on from this, landrover decided they wanted to make the 50th. The car was then converted to RHD from LHD by landrover, uk air conditioning fitted ect, the hard top put on and again used to prove the concept of the 50th.

Shorlty after this in 1999 it was scrapped by landrover and re registered on a Q plate, now a 1999 registered car.

It was then converted completely to gas lpg, and this is where my project lies……

I really need some info on what to do and what parts to source. I’m used to working on derv defenders but not petrol.

My plan is to get the car back to factory spec, lower it back to standard, put back the gems ecu or a tornado kit. Blow it over in standard NAS paint and have as close to a 50th as I can get, pretty much identical inside etc.

It has no fuel tank, sender, pipes, pump, wiring, engine harness, just runs on gas with a dizzy.

So where to start, fuel tank would be good and fuel pump I suppose.

I had thought about carbs as the dizzy is there but not sure, I would like to get it back to factory with the efi if possible. However, carbs may be a temporary fix so I can drive it about.

I plan on using RPI engineering, but cant get it there due to lpg disappearing ff the face of the earth.

So my plea to you people out there is can you help with any part numbers please?

Many thanks in advance. Steve

Hi Steve,
I considered adding this one add to my collection, well done for taking the plunge!
Nice to hear you want to lower it back to std ride height.

There is a fuel tank on eBay ESR2657 item no. 166233094490
YRM and RCP make the tank cradles.

You can still get the fuel pump, but you would have to make the pipes because they are obsolete, as are so many early defender parts now, particularly the for the NAS/50th.

The best source for your part numbers and diagrams is the jaguar land rover classic parts website. You can find most part numbers to allow you to search elsewhere.

Depending on how much of the fuel system is missing you will have a challenge finding original parts, but nothing is too difficult to get around even if it’s not for the purists.

I have come to realise that during the rebuild of my 50th, that you just can’t replace everything as original, no matter how much you search.
There are still good quality alternative solutions out there, just takes a bit of researching.

Once I accepted that, my project moved on at a better pace.

Hope this helps, good luck!

Jerome

Thanks.

This one is a challenge.
It’s a lot more work than I’d first thought.

I’ve changed all the brakes. Had the speedo fixed due to the known cable issue. Fixed the oil leaks and removed the exhaust.

I’ve got manifolds coming from a discovery 3.9 and purchased new Down pipes with cats. A td5 centre and rear box. Got a lot of help on def2.net.

I have purchased the tank and have worked out what fuel pump I need and I’m compiling a parts list.

I’m also talking to rpi and Lloyds about engine management. I think for ease it will be best to have a stand alone management system as it’s just too hard to source what I need.

As a short term fix I thought about carbs as it already has the dizzy. Just so it off gas!

Lots and lots to do.

However. I think when and if I get it done it could be a special car that will be rare.

I managed to decipher the original chassis number and it is indeed a NAS development car. So technically I do potentially have the only factory rhd NAS ever built.

Steve.

Ha yes! Always more work than you think, no matter how many times you take on a project. Why do we never learn…

By the images it appears you have many of the unique items of the NAS spec. Like the interior roll bar cushions the auto console and the dashboard switches in the radio housing.

So I would agree, once you get the mechanics sorted, you will have a very rare machine.

Best of luck!

Interesting history

For V8 info you can also try rangerovers.pub. We also have a couple of LPG experts (even if it is just to tell you what to remove. Shame they removed the tank, but looks like you have most of the rest. You can access a version of lrcat at https://new.lrcat.com/, but as said it will not help you find any 50th specific parts as they are like rocking horse doo doo.
