I have a low mileage 50th, which is in desperate need of some attention on the bodywork. I know very little about cars.
Is it hard to source the paint colour and should I consider a full respray? What else is likely to need some care and should I look to get checked out? Is there anything worth updating whilst I'm having work done that will keep the original aesthetic but still enhance the vehicle?
Can anyone recommend somewhere for restoration in the South East (preferably Kent or SE London)?
Thanks for any advice. |

Welcome to the Forum
Look into the condition of the chassis and rear cross member, by now either the rear cross member has been replaced or likely requires attention.
Also the chassis is likely to be a point where it needs protection, so look into a Dinitrol or similar treatment.
Other things like suspension bushes being rubber could have deteriorated due to age rather than use. These would show up on an MOT but only when really bad - changing now would improve the handling if done.
All depends on what you are using it for, if its a second car for fun - just enjoy and get things done as and when; and maybe try to do / learn as much as you can - as paying anyone to do the jobs is likely to be expensive.
YouTube and Forums offer loads of advice for the novice and most things can be done with a basic set of tools.
I'd definitely get the chassis and rear cross member check sooner though.
Also worth checking out www.defender2.net as its more active with Defender support rather than this as a dedicated Defender 50th Forum. Most Defender problems are common across all models to some extent. |

Hi and welcome.
There are a fair few places that can be reccomended and a fair few to avoid !!
As previoulsy said, I would get the chassis looked at first just so you know what you are starting with and can budget accordingly.
Nothing worse than doing the body work and finding you need to take it apart again to do the chassis properly
We are in surrey and there are some good specialists our way, if you want some advice then drop me a message and happy to reccomend
