Nearing the end of the refurb now and the roll cage will come off for the final respray. Thinking about stainless steel bolts when I put it back on. Anyone know what bolts I need and where to get them please? Thanks. _________________ ex GB 278 |

Absolutely understood but what got me thinking was the picture of the Safety Devices aftermarket roll cage on the Paddock website. They look suspiciously like stainless. They are certainly silver in colour. I thought they looked smart. _________________ ex GB 278 |

if your bolts look a little old, clean them up with a wire brush, fit them and then paint them matt black, either mask everywhere and spray them; or use an artist brush and colour them in.
There are some on the inside that you could substitute as they are less visible.
BUT the chances of the roll cage being used in anger is low; and not all LR have them; so you could take the risk from a cosmetic point of view; never seen torx with the right profile in stainless. |

I think the ones you saw are on the 'Style' bar painted silver.
It is called style for that reason.......its about the looks not safety. |

BTW, I have always wondered: why do the 50th need a safety roll bar ? Or rather, why diesel Defenders do not need one if it is so important ? |

They were fitted to the 50th Defender as one of the many bells and whistles that LR could think of to make the 50th Anniversay something special; and unless you intend to do any risky offroading you are unlikely to roll.
I was heavily into off roading in the past; and low speed green laning or trailing is unlikey to roll. Its at speed where things could happen
AS for a motorway collision; again unlikely to roll;
There is pitures if you google GB015 as this was involved in a serious roll and the cage likely protected the front well. |

Agree 70 isn't as good, but if only a style bar was in use then would be ok.
Too bling for me - prefer original. |

Thanks for all the suggestions. Didn't realise it would create so much interest. Generally I like to stay original (I've put back Rayleigh cloth instead of leather seats and replaced NAS lights with originals) however my concession to bling is stainless steel. I even bought some SS windscreen vent hinges at Kelmarsh yesterday.
On that subject I met someone there who confirmed the view that anything less than 8 rated tensile strength was inadequate for a safety roll cage. However he suggested that bright zinc plated (BZP) high tensile steel M10 socket head button screws (rated 10.9) would do the job: style, strength and safety!
Someone will probably tell me why not? _________________ ex GB 278 |
