Had to have an tubular outrigger fitted for the MOT last October, and its already had a rear cross member... so my plans were to get a galvanised chassis one day... and been looking at ordering one... as they have a long lead time.

I then considered getting a Dinitrol rust proof treatment recently; and found a centre nearby. (Rochdale Rust Proofing) as I had a meeting at a suppliers nearby that finished early I called in for a chat.

Had a look at many defender pictures of the work they had done; and looked promising.

I also been refurbishing second hand radius arms, trailing arms and a-frame and thought... new chassis and polybush while at it - and nicely painted cast iron bits.

So I though perhaps I go Dinitrol, and swap the whole suspension while its undergoing rust treatment.

So I've been under the 50th having a proper look; and to be honest; there is nothing frightening - its at the stage where the current protection is now flaky but no massive rust issues... so back to Dinitrol.

Then I've been reading up about spring colours... Shocked

So back under with WD40 to clean up the springs to find the colour and then realised these too look ok; so do the turrets etc etc...

(spring colour still confusing, blue green, blue yellow fronts - match the workshop manual; but drivers rear was yellow green... so maybe more cleaning....)

So now I thinking - just radius arms, training arms, panhard and a-frame purely for the polybush reason with the full rust proofing treatment With them off)

what do you guys think?

I think its miles off a chassis swap as its only done 80K and now in my ownership is kept in the dry...

is a tidy original chassis better than a galvanised replacement?

Anyway I think its the Dintrol route for now as it will should last another 10 years + without welding based on my usage...

but... perhaps a beer will help me decide Confused

Changing to a galv chassis is the ultimate in longevity, but be prepared for a lot of extra expense.

There will be lots of "while you are there" extra costs that will crop up.

Expect at least £500 in additional "sundry" items like nuts & bolts, brackets, seal strips etc etc. On top of the £1500 plus price tag of the chassis and typically £500 minimum in labour...

And you will probably want to paint the galv chassis black too - a few hundred extra...

And if your current chassis is ok, then why go for this extra pain and expense.

After many years of chasing the rust on old cars, I now rustproof every car I intend to keep for a long time, and inspect and touch up the rustproofing regularly.

Full rustproofing is a bit of a mucky and grubby job, but it's all done in a weekend at most, and you get to see all the good and bad under the car.

I can recommend the Dynax range - their aerosols are absolutely brilliant.
This stuff is excellent - it self heals, goes on nicely, and isn't sticky and gooey.

The last car I did was a Lexus RX400h - I removed all the undertrays, and got it professionally steam cleaned underneath. I locally wire brushed any loose bits and touched up any rusty bits with a rust converting paint. I then sprayed the Dynax cavity wax in all the cavities, and the underbody wax on all the under parts.

Refit the undertrays and your golden.

Then, once a year, at service time, have a can of dynax ready to touch up any bits that have worn away...

My experience of poly bushes is that they wear the arms. So if replacing them in the future then standard bushes will be too loose and not work and you have to replace the arms. And even if you replace with new poly the arms are still worn and the new poly will be slack as well.

I also find poly bushes a but hard (I know there are options now so this might have changed).

I would fit genuine LR standard bushes....
