It's happened, after 5 years laying idle, GB386 shall rise from the ashes.

She needs a new chassis, but I wanted to check that everything works before I take it to bits....

And so to get the beast to start...

Surprisingly, all the security measures weren't the problem - both the land rover and aftermarket keyfobs still worked.

There have been a few annoyances.
Bulbs missing from the cluster, inertia switch and ECU relay also missing, and a couple of blown fuses.

Fuses replaced, inertia switch and ecu relay temporarily bypassed, and I have a fuel pump running and an ECU alive and talking to me.

Still not got it started, I'm suspecting the crank position sensor...

But a lot of it works, and I'm wading through a maze of poorly fitted immobiliser wiring!

The fight goes on...

In the meantime, does anyone know if the inertia switch from a P38 or D2 is the same. Also, the same for the ECU relay - anyone know where else they were used.

Better still, anyone got the part numbers?

The enforced workshop down time while I wait for parts has been giving me useful time on the 90... learning a lot about GEMS!

But I've got it started!

I managed to fully bypass the missing relays, and get the security system to "mobilise".

She started instantly!
Literally "on the button" - stale fuel and all!

But made terrible engine noise, tappet clatter and no oil pressure! ( video available)

I ran it only for a few seconds - enough to realise that the oil pressure wasn't coming up...

Great. I might have a duff engine!

I'm not worried, I have another engine, a 4.6, but I was hoping to use this one in the short term while I rebuild and upgrade the other one.

I'll have a quick look at the oil relief valve, it might be stuck open....
We will see...

Anyone know the part numbers for the ECU/Fuel pump relay and the inertia switch? And were they used on any other models?

Thanks in advance...

Hi,

Glad 386 is finally getting going.
The fuel pump relay is YWB100820 and I'm sure disco 1 use them as well.

I know 386 was going well before it was rear ended so hope you can sort the engine

Thanks for that.

Yes, the fuel injection relay is common to the D1 V8's £100 though!
But a very similar FI relay was used in the rover K series, and I've found one locally for €10, so I think I can make that work - worth a try.

The inertia switch is common across almost all EFI rovers, but is different from the one used on RRC's

I've got a few more things to try.
There are two locations for the oil pressure relief valve.
Also, I'll take off the oil filter and see if I can free off the PRV that way.

It's a bit of a pain though. I had hoped to use the original engine until I get the 4.6 rebuilt in slow time.

Still, I could just fit the 4.6 as-is, and use the new 4.6 crank I have in stores to build up the original engine... there's a thought. It would also keep engine numbers too...

Had to google the part number; couldn't understand how a relay could cost £100. So that's what that other box is behind the ecu Very Happy

Good luck with getting it going...
pressure relief valve looks like its easy to remove clean and try again... may just be stuck with lack of use and a clean may sort it.

it may be worth taking the back off the relay and testing them 1 by 1.

Doesn't have anything too fancy. May just be some dry joints on the PCB.
de-solder and re-solder each one.

You may also be easily able to see the coil pin out and switch each relay one by one and measure /check connections with a multi meter for resistance on the contacts.

Unfortunately, my car is missing the EFI relay, otherwise I'd be doing exactly that.

Currently, its jury-rigged with bits of wire, which isn't exactly optimal!

Also, the pressure relief valve on the filter side of the housing is a pain to get to. It'll be easier if I remove the oil filter, but I only want to do that once I have a new one ready to screw back on, as I'll likely have to drive a screwdriver through it to get it off. None of my usual filter wrenches could shift it.

Slow and steady...

Besides, I've got my workshop full of cars that are awaiting bits...
Total of three cars taking up space, so I can't do much else at the moment.

I definitely need more garage space for my business!

On the plus side, everything else seems to work on the truck.

Good point; i did read you were missing the relay; didn't compute!
I have seen a couple of open pictures of the PCB and they were slightly different; some had resistors some had diodes; and the PCB looked different. The Rover 200 one may not work; as the pinout could be different.

Yeah, I'm sure the rover 200 one is different, but I'm happy to open it up and modify it - I just want to make it run at the moment without buggering about with little jumper wires.

Long term, I'll be fitting megasquirt, so this relay pack will likely need modifying anyway - I basically only want the box with its connectors - I'll make up the innards.

Found the culprit- oil strainer has come loose!
Bearings are worn, timing chain really slack, oil pump is ok, the crank is ok too.

So I'll try new bearings, new timing chain and see how it goes...
