I have seen twoo 50th anniversary.
One has 40.000km and needs paintjob
The other has 100.000km and is in perfect condition.
Almost same price.
I am worried about the automatic grearbox condition.
100.000 km is a lot for this car?
Should i be worried?
Thanks in advance for your knowledge here, because it is a big buy for me.

Hi Albert, London calling
100,000 km is 62,000 miles, given a 1998 Def 50th = average 4500 miles per year
40,000 km is just short of 25,000 miles which is remarkable, less than 1900 miles per year
Both VERY low mileage, check out the service history and documents ..
OK 50ths average 70 - 120,000 mles on clock, very fewer any near, many higher _________________ Peter

Thanks!!!
So I understand that I can be confortable with the gearbox in both cases?
How many miles is the average for replacement? |

By the way, is there any simple test to know if the gearbox is correct? |

It all depends how it's been treated .
Your bigger worry is the transfer box .
Make sure it goes into low range and diff lock too . If it does not its seized .
This can happen through not using it .
A 14 year old gear box still running on old oil after 25k is far worse than a 80k gear box which has had regular services . It's the luck of the draw really .
They can last 150k + not really all that expensive to have re built though . The gear box is the least of your worries .
Does the engine run well ?
Have them both fully inspected by a mechanic .
Look out for suspension sagging , rust , rotting crossmember . Wheel bearings does it pull to one side when driving . Is the steering box leaking down the arm ? This is expensive to change . Bubbling paint on the doors means you need new doors as the steal inside the door is rusty and is now rotting the ally skin.
Don't worry about the clonk noise when selecting reverse , that's normal.

Intresting that explains something
I was worried about the gearbox in mine as its average millage for the year but was surprised how good it was for the mileage but when looking through the history was shocked to see a new engine less the 2k ago but it hasn’t done much for the last two years less than 3K.
I find LR Autos are good for 150-175k miles but lack of use can be just as bad though and never gun them from cold that shortens their lives drastically
